Learn from Winning Strategies That Aim to Create a Culture of Health

Six communities were awarded the RWJF Roadmaps to Health Prize in honor of their outstanding work to help people live healthier lives. Could your community apply any of these innovative policy and environmental improvements to enable people to make healthier choices?

See what the winning communities are doing to improve health:

  1. Santa Cruz County, California:Investing in the health of its young people by expanding insurance coverage, creating an ordinance around healthy restaurant options, and curbing youth drinking.
  2. New Orleans, Louisiana: Encouraging comprehensive health care, healthier foods and more physical activity as part of the city's ongoing recovery effort.
  3. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Improving health equity by addressing challenges like obesity and school readiness.
  4. Fall River, Massachusetts: Bringing leaders from government, business, education and other sectors together to help people live healthier lives.
  5. Manistique, Michigan: Empowering everyone in the community to make healthy choices through farmers' markets, walking and biking paths, and healthier schools.
  6. Minneapolis, Minnesota: Promoting healthy living and helping high-risk youths prepare for college and careers.

Each of the communities were awarded $25,000 to continue their journeys toward better health. The RWJF Roadmaps to Health Prize was launched this year to further the work of the County Healthy Rankings & Roadmaps program, which aims to educate the public and policy-makers on the multiple factors that influence community health—such as education, economic conditions, and the physical environment—and to provide solutions that will improve community health.
