The City of Berlin was awarded with a 2 year HEAL Community Grant in April, 2012.

In order to best serve the health disparities in their rural community, the Berlin HEAL Steering Committee conducted focus groups at key community locations. The purpose of the focus groups was to identify challenges to healthy eating and physical activity as well as opportunities to make healthy food and an active lifestyle more accessible. Residents were able to provide much needed input to the Berlin HEAL Steering Committee, informing their project on the most needed, and likely successful, strategies to implement.
Berlin's top HEAL Strategies include:
- A Community Garden and Playground will be developed with Neighborhood Revitalization and HEAL funds by re-purposing a green space left by the demolition of dilapidated housing
- Complete Streets Policy will be proposed to increase walking and biking safety in and around the City
- Way Finding Signs – including kiosks and trail signs – for local trail and walking routes in the City will be installed at the request of community residents
